No.  Commercial portables are much better than consumer portables, but neither has the cleaning “muscle” of truck mounted equipment..  See Which equipment is right for you? to get more detailed information.

You have several choices, beginning with a do-it-yourself rental from the local grocery or hardware store.  See Which equipment is right for you? to get more detailed information.

These terms are misnomers.  “Steam” cleaning is the common term for hot water extraction, and “dry” cleaning is the common term for bonnet or foam cleaning, both of which use water as the primary solvent.  Use of true dry cleaning solvents for carpet would be illegal in the US.  See “Steam” Cleaning and “Dry” Cleaning for more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

The answer depends on your individual situation.  In general, residential carpet should be cleaned every six-to-twelve months if you have children or pets, or every eighteen months if you want to keep your stain resistant carpet’s warranty intact.  See the Cleaning Frequency Recommended by the EPA to help you decide.

How often should I clean my carpet?

What is the difference between “steam” cleaning and “dry” cleaning for carpets?

If I want to clean with hot water extraction, how do I know which cleaning equipment is best?

Don’t portable and truck mount hot water extraction units clean about the same?

No.  Carpet is typically made from the same basic materials as the clothing each of us wash every time we wear them.  What is detrimental is leaving carpet wet for long periods of time.  Growth of molds and mildew is encouraged by water and darkness, and the result of leaving a carpet wet for several days is similar to leaving your wet clothes in a washing machine for several days.  See Carpet Mythology for more detail.
